Finding this book was one of the best things that happened to me in January, mostly because I spent the month being sick, but it truly sparked my imagination and creative juices. I was inspired to make art for the first time in several months! Pop surrealism was unknown to me except in passing on the internet until Camilla explains what it is.
Pop Painting introduces the concept of pop surrealism before going in-depth of Camilla’s painting process. With lots of progress and final photographs coupled with detailed descriptions, Camilla makes her technique look easy to pick up. So I tried it out. But not with paint. I have more practice with colored pencils, so I choose the medium I was most comfortable with before sketching my ideas.
One of the examples shown in this book is a piece entitled Butterfly Kisses, which features a butterfly made to look like watermelon. On another piece briefly mentioned, Strawberries and Shortcakes, there is a strawberry butterfly.
These fruit butterflies made me want to create some of my own, so I started researching fruits that had drastically different insides from the outsides and started sketching out some of my ideas. I had so many ideas that I decided to create a series of fruit butterflies, including dragon fruit, kiwi, blood orange, and perhaps a few more. The sketches didn’t look like much. They really needed color to convey my whole concept, but once I created a larger version of one and got to work, I was ecstatic. Here’s how my dragon fruit piece finished.
This is not a great picture, but I hope to have scans made and have prints available for purchase in the near future. And I’m definitely taking my fruit butterflies to the art show at ARCHON later this year.
I thoroughly enjoyed the creative spark that Camilla inspired through her book and her artwork. I have added her to my watch list and hope that others can find her art just as inspiring.
I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.
