Book Haul: January 21-27, 2018

Last week was an awesome week for book mail!  I was going to post this overview on Saturday when my Book Outlet order arrived.  Except, well, my Book Outlet order didn’t arrive.  So then I didn’t really feel like talking about books when I was worried about my books that were stuck in a different city.

But I’m all geared up and exhilarated again, so I’d like to share all the awesome that did arrive last week!!

My last OTSPSecretSister of the round came and super brightened my day!  I have had so much fun sending and receiving cheer 🙂  This month’s theme was purple and it was perfect.  I’ve listened to some of the Nightvale podcast and was excited when a book came out.  Tricks for Free is a signed arc in the InCryptid series.  The caramel corn is a local specialty.  Who doesn’t need a giant hashtag eraser?  And I’m excited to try the colourpop lippie stick.  I’ve never had one before and rarely wear lipstick, but yay!

I’ve been eagerly waiting for the sequel to Peadar O’Guilin’s The Call, so when The Invasion showed up at work, I had to snap it up!  RWBY Vol. 1 is the result of a trade.

Cast in Deception and The Bones of the Earth were also results of recent trades.

Another trade meant getting the mp3 audiobook of The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms.  And I won a Twitter giveaway from Emily R. King, the last of her The Rogue Queen arcs 🙂

The last thing I want to share was the preorder incentive from The Cruel Prince.  That pin is gorgeous and hurray for author signatures!

Book Haul: January 1-6 2018

First book haul post of the year!  Woot!  Here’s the books I received during the first week of January.  These were a combination of review copies picked up at work, trades arriving, contest winning, and pre-orders coming in. This is going to be a fantastic year for books 🙂

IMG_4621

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black (B&N special edition) is both a pre-order and a trade.  I’m loving both the black cover and the gold foil on the book itself!  Last Star Burning by Caitlin Sangster is an arc I received in a trade.  I’m pretty excited to read this one.

I received this finished copy of The Nine by Tracy Townsend from a blog contest last month.

Winter of Ice and Iron by Rachel Neumeier is an arc from a trade.  Heart on Fire by Amanda Bouchet is a pre-order.  Onyx & Ivory by Mindee Arnett, The Smoke Thieves by Sally Green, Likelik3 by Jay Kristoff, and Across the Dark Water by Jennifer Lynn Alvarez are review copies from work.  I’m going to have to be pretty picky about what 2018 releases I read with my current plans.

These last 2 are also arcs that I received through trade.  The Sky is Yours by Chandler Klang Smith and Don’t Cosplay with my Heart by Cecil Castelluci.  These weren’t on my radar until they were offered up for trade, so I’m excited for these two.

Heart on Fire (Kingmaker Chronicles, #3)

Heart on Fire by Amanda Bouchet

The Kingmaker Chronicles, #3

Publication date: January 2, 2018

The riveting conclusion to The Kingmaker Chronicles!

My thoughts:

This was a great ending to the trilogy!  I’m going to be super vague about everything because this is definitely a series I recommend reading in order, and I don’t want to give away any spoilers.  To that end, you should know that we spend a lot of time in Cat’s head.  Like A LOT.  To the point that I felt like she was overthinking things, and in slowed the pace way down.

That was the only complaint I had about this book though, honestly.  There were less steamy moments, but no less action and tense scenes.  In fact, I was frequently worrying about favorite characters fast approaching death!  I loved that Cat and Griffin came to terms about certain aspects of their relationship.  And I loved how much more we learned about Cat.  Amanda is truly wonderful at weaving characters I can get behind.

I hope we get more from this universe in the future!  I’d love to see more books written about other side characters 🙂

GODS. I’M AN IDIOT.

Without Griffin—and apparently a few meddling Gods—to push me along, I’d still be telling fortunes at the circus, lying about my past, ignoring my future, and living as far away from my tyrant mother as humanly possible.

True understanding thuds into place. Hope isn’t just an abstract concept; it’s me. Flesh and blood me. Griffin knew it all along. Probably everyone did. I’m an idea in human form.

I have the power of the Gods at my fingertips.

The only thing ever stopping me has been me.

Waiting on Wednesday: Beneath the Sugar Sky by Seanan McGuire

Beneath the Sugar Sky (Wayward Children, #3)

Hardcover, 160 pages
Expected publication: January 9th 2018 by tor.com
As expected, I loved this installment just as much as much as the previous two!  This story picks up shortly after the end of Every Heart a Doorway and gives us several new characters to fall in love with as well as checking up on others from the first book.  I really enjoyed the mix of fresh and loved character development.  We were even treated to more diverse characters such as a Muslim baker and a bigger girl happy with her appearance.
I can’t wait for more of these books to follow!  Seanan confirmed that there are plans to continue the series for another couple of books at least.  And hopefully more.  As long as they keep selling, they will keep coming.  I wholeheartedly support this trend and will do my best to make sure that the publisher knows we want more!

Summary:

Beneath the Sugar Sky returns to Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children. At this magical boarding school, children who have experienced fantasy adventures are reintroduced to the “real” world.

Sumi died years before her prophesied daughter Rini could be born. Rini was born anyway, and now she’s trying to bring her mother back from a world without magic.
